Notes:	General Overview: This keynote paper from the 2008 International Conference on Homicide considers the factors in the antecedents to homicide in Western Australia. Discussion: This paper discusses the similarities of contexts and events occurring previous to homicide. Johnson considers three categories of homicide: intimate partner homicide, familicide and intimate partner homicide followed by suicide. The author suggests that the relationship status of the victim and the offender and how this is seen by these individuals makes these categories difficult to define. This study was based on in-depth interviews with perpetrators and family members of both victims and perpetrators. Further, perpetrators were asked to complete a questionnaire retrospectively reflecting on their experiences of childhood trauma. Johnson contends that there were commonalities in the antecedent events of these three categories of homicide. The occurrence of homicide was often typified by a family situation which included violence, alcohol and drug abuse and mental illness. Further, in the categories of intimate partner homicide and familicide the perpetrators’ histories were characterised by childhood trauma. This could not be assessed in the homicide-suicide contingent.
