Notes:	Expert Group Meeting Bangkok, Thailand 17-20 September 2012 This paper was prepared to update participants attending the Expert Group Meeting on prevention of violence against women and girls in September 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand. This meeting was preliminary to the fifty-seventh session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women held in February 2013. While acknowledging the progress of women’s and children’s organisations in the areas of justice and service responses for survivors of gender-based violence internationally, Fergus stresses the importance of primary prevention in the worldwide effort to end this violence. The paper’s focus is on current evidence and practice for primary prevention and it provides recommendations aimed at the challenges and gaps it identifies. Responsibility for change is assigned chiefly to States but also includes international and regional institutions and other stakeholders.
