Notes:	In February 2009, the Commonwealth Government commissioned VicHealth to conduct a national survey on Australian attitudes to violence against women. In addition to setting a benchmark against which changes in beliefs and values can be measured, the survey provides valuable information about the factors which shape attitudes to violence against women. This thematic review compares the survey findings with the latest literature in this area. With Australian governments at all levels investing significant resources in primary prevention, it is timely to consider the processes that determine community attitudes. Recent initiatives that have received substantial government funding include respectful relationships education programs in schools and social marketing campaigns utilising the popular media, such as social networking web sites. In order to maximise the impact of these interventions, we need to know what factors affect community acceptance of violence and make sure they are effectively targeted.
