Notes:  Overview: This resource discusses the multifaceted needs of women who use substances and experience domestic and family violence. The project arose from refuge managers’ concern about the increasing number of women presenting with substance use to women’s refuges. It makes recommendations for better integrated service responses to issues of violence and drug and alcohol abuse.

Discussion:The resource is presented as a series of accessible, detailed fact sheets for domestic violence professionals. These describe the reasons why women use drugs and alcohol, detail the needs of women who use substances and are experiencing violence, and debunk myths about women, domestic violence and substance use.

The Good Practice:fact sheet discusses the integrative approaches to caring for women with complex needs who have sought support. It suggests taking a trauma-informed care approach; planning for safety with the client; harm minimisation and forming local partnerships between violence and drug and alcohol support services.
