General Overview: This paper reports on a study carried out in New Zealand examining women’s access to refuges to escape domestic violence, if they have mental health or drug and alcohol problems.

Discussion: The author surveyed 39 refuges. The survey established that 525 women with 447 children accessing or attempting to access refuge services have mental health or substance abuse problems. Many of these women are unable to access assistance because of their problems and refuge staff struggle to deal with these women due to lack of resources and specific training. The “Survey about women unable to access refuge because of mental health or substance abuse problems” is included as appendix one.
