Notes:  General Overview: :This Australian study compared sentencing in five Australian states, New Zealand, England and the United States.

Discussion: :The study found that the imprisonment rate per 100 000 head of population was higher in New South Wales than in New Zealand, England or Canada. New South Wales has the fourth highest rate in Australia. New South Wales has the highest maximum penalties available for sexual assault, and has the highest proportion of sexual assault offenders sentenced to full-time imprisonment among all Australian jurisdictions. New South Wales also has the highest full-time imprisonment rate in Australia and internationally for break and enter offences. The study concludes that it is not necessary to further increase sentences for criminal offences in New South Wales.
