Notes:	Overview: This report from the United Kingdom (UK) examines the deaths of pregnant or recently delivered women who died either as a result of murder or from medical or psychiatric causes, and who were known to be subject to domestic abuse. Discussion: Between 2003-2005, 70 of the women who died in the UK from all causes had features of domestic abuse, including four women with genital mutilation/cutting. Of these deaths,19 homicides were a direct result of domestic abuse and most of the other women had proactively self-reported domestic abuse to a health care professional before or during their pregnancy. Pregnancy is known to be related to an increase in domestic abuse. The report emphasises that, as murder is not routinely reported to the Enquiry into Maternal Deaths in the UK, the cases described should be seen as representative of many other unknown cases, some factors identified include: * in at least three cases, there was family collusion and secret keeping and many had ‘overbearing’ partners or other family members who were present at all visits The report examines and discusses some individual cases of murder and describes failures of care and vigilance that failed to protect the women. The report concludes by calling for immediate implementation of the existing and new recommendations of the National Domestic Abuse and Pregnancy Advisory Group for England.
