Notes:  Discussion: :The report is based on a survey of 368 shelter residents as well as in-depth qualitative interviews with 20 residents who had left the shelters. It includes a review of what is known about woman abuse and a history of shelters for abused women in Canada. The results of the survey are reported in detail. It includes information about the type of abuse endured, how residents heard about the shelter, previous shelter stays, reasons for not coming sooner and what women wanted from the shelter stay. It reports on what residents liked about the shelter, its staff and other residents, and what they did when they left the shelter. The report also considers the particular needs of Aboriginal shelter residents.
