Notes:  General Overview: This US report examines domestic violence offences reported to the police between 2000 and 2005 in West Virginia and examines the types of offences reported, the demographic characteristics of the victims, the geographic distribution of offences, the use of weapons and the incidence of injury. The report includes a discussion of domestic homicide.

Discussion: This report examines data from the West Virginia Incident Based Reporting System, maintained by the West Virginia State Police.

The number of reported domestic violence victims in 2006 was 4.1% lower than in 2001, while the total number of crime victims increased by 2.1% over the same time period. About two thirds of victims of domestic violence reported simple assault. Other common offences were intimidation and aggravated assault. 75.3% of victims were female and most were aged between 18 and 44 years old. About two thirds of all victims were victimised by an intimate partner but only 48% of male victims were victimised by their intimate partner. Non-whites were slightly over-represented as victims. The vast majority of reported sexual assault victims were juveniles.

Most victims reported no injury (45%) or minor injury (52%). Only 2% reported a serious physical injury. Men were more likely to have a serious injury and men with injuries were more likely to be victimised by a non-intimate partner (52%). Of the 27 domestic homicides in 2005, 15 were women and 10 of these were killed by an intimate partner. Of the 9 men killed, 3 were killed by an intimate partner.
