Notes: | Drawing on presentations from Non-consensual Sexual Experiences of Young People in Developing Countries: A Consultative Meeting:held in New Delhi, India from 22-25 September 2003, this brief examines existing research into the experiences of young men as victims of sexual coercion and the perspectives of young men as perpetrators of sexual violence. Evidence obtained from a few small-scale studies conducted in Nigeria, India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Cambodia, Peru and South Africa is presented and common themes and key issues from this non-representative collection are discussed. Findings from the meeting were that a greater-than-expected number of males were victims of sexual coercion, that few sought legal redress or shared their experiences with others and that male victims suffered a variety of health and psychosocial consequences. Other conclusions were that significant numbers of males perpetrated rape and gang rape, that they felt a sense of entitlement to force sex and experienced both peer pressure to engage in such activity and silent acquiescence from their community. Recommendations for action are given. |
