Title: Researching violence against women : a practical guide for researchers and activists
Authors: Ellsberg, Mary
Heise, Lori
Keywords: Statistics;Measurement
Year: 2005
Publisher: WHO & PATH
Notes:  Overview and aims: This manual was developed in response to the need to improve the quality, quantity and comparability of international data on physical and sexual abuse. The manual draws on extensive research and experience, including that undertaken by members of the International Research Network on Violence Against Women (IRNVAW).

The guide is not designed to replace training in research and research practices, and assumes a level of familiarity with research methodologies. It is designed for researchers, as well as activists, service providers and community workers who want to become conversant in methodological issues. The manual focuses primarily on intimate partner violence against women, although much of the information is applicable to other gender-based violence. The guide concentrates on applied research rather than research designed for academic or theoretical purposes.

Content: The manual provides a methodical and comprehensive guide to designing research with examples, tables and illustrations provided throughout. It begins with a discussion of the health and development issues involved in violence against women and presents data relating to this. It examines ethical considerations for researchers and provides guidance on how to develop a research strategy. This section describes the different types of research, the research process and choosing a topic, then examines issues of design, methodology, collaboration and drafting of proposals.

The manual then provides a detailed discussion and instruction on the various aspects of qualitative and quantitative approaches to research. Issues covered include sampling strategies, challenges of definition and measurement in quantitative research and the various tools for collecting data. The guide covers the process of building a research team, and carrying out fieldwork.

Finally, the process of analysing data is detailed and the transition from research to action is discussed. Various methods of effective delivery of research results to the constituencies and stakeholders and to the wider and global community are outlined and discussed.

Appendices attached are the World Health Organisation Violence Against Women Instrument, training exercises for interviewers and suggested resources.
