Notes:	Revised February 2008 General Overview: This US manual provides information about applying a cost-benefit approach to valuing domestic violence prevention programs. Discussion: This manual aims to help domestic violence workers assess the economic value of their violence prevention programs. It begins with definitions of domestic violence and primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, and a discussion of integrated and collaborative responses. It then defines basic cost terms, including cost estimates, cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness and cost analysis and provides detailed information about calculating the net benefit of a program. The manual argues that workers in domestic violence prevention must identify their theory of cause (that is, why domestic violence occurs) and their theory of change (how the program will prevent or reduce domestic violence) in order to make their case to funding bodies. They will also need to use statistics about rates of violence. Californian and US statistics are included. The manual includes sample letters, fact sheets and a worksheet for making the case for a prevention program. The appendices include glossary, a table listing the various costs of domestic violence, a Cross and Multi-Sector Collaboration Evaluation Tool and a list of resources for planning, evaluating and costing prevention or service programs.
