Notes:  Aimed at child protection workers, supervisors, managers and others working within the US child protection system, this guidebook provides a model for ensuring perpetrators are held accountable for their actions and appropriate intervention strategies with both the abuser and the victim/s are developed. Chapter 1 provides a ‘behavioural definition’ of an abuser based on existing research and practice experience. Chapter 2 highlights some of the racial, cultural and socio-economic factors that will be relevant to working with perpetrators of violence and attempts to deconstruct some of the myths surrounding the nature of violence in non-Caucasian communities. In Chapter 3, research into the general characteristics of abusers is reviewed and some of the implications these findings have for practice are considered, while Chapter 4 provides a model for assessing the dangerousness of abusers. Chapter 5 presents a range of techniques for interviewing abusers within the child protection system and suggests some central principles that might guide practice and intervention in this area. Chapter 6 discusses the utility and applicability of clinical evaluations of abusers within the child protection system, and Chapter 7 outlines various intervention strategies and service planning approaches that have been successful in preventing further violence and ensuring victim safety.
