This handbook, produced by the Secretary for National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC), is part of a targeted strategy to raise awareness within Aboriginal communities about family violence, child abuse and neglect, and child sexual assault. The first three sections focus on these forms of abuse in detail by defining, identifying the effects, providing information on how to recognise abuse and respond in ways that support children and prevent abuse from continuing. The role of Aboriginal and Islander Child Care Agencies in supporting families and protecting children is emphasised, highlighting obligations to report children at risk. Detail is provided about the child protection process, child protection legislation, and who is mandated by law to report suspected abuse for each state. The final section of the handbook lists support and legal services, Indigenous and other national organisations related to family violence and child abuse, as well as reference to useful publications, pamphlets and websites.
