Notes:  These guidelines are a revised version of the 2009 ‘Best practice principles for use in parenting disputes when family violence or abuse is alleged’ originally released by the Family Court of Australia. The guidelines have been updated to reflect changes to family law under the Family Law Legislation Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Act 2011 (Cth).

The principles are intended to assist judges, federal magistrates, court staff, legal professionals and litigants. The principles are applicable in all cases involving the risk or presence of family violence or child abuse in proceedings before courts exercising jurisdiction under the Family Law Act.
