Keywords: Client resources;Training;Screening

Notes:  This package, developed by the University of Tasmania’s Department of Rural Health, contains information about domestic violence, readings, activities and questions for reflection. It is intended for facilitators to use when preparing education sessions, and it is appropriate for a range of learners (health professionals, community, higher education students, and police). It is designed to engage participants in an active way rather than passive learning. It is not intended to equip participants to become specialised counsellors, as it is only to provide a basic understanding of domestic violence, and appropriate ways of responding to it. It contains guidelines for facilitators and participants, and 4 topic areas, each consisting of a number of modules.

Each module is prefaced with its aim, objectives and learning outcomes, along with pre and co-requisite contents. Topic Area 1 introduces information about domestic violence, and the modules explain about the definition, context and victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.

Topic Area 2 contains issues surrounding the recognition of domestic violence, along with modules on possible indicators, the impact of domestic violence on women, children, men, and older people.

Topic Area 3 looks at health professionals and how to respond to domestic violence, with modules discussing health professionals as being a vital link to support, how to provide effective support to victims, and how to respond to perpetrators.

Safe work practices form Topic Area 4, which includes modules on ethical and medico-legal issues, governance and protocols, debriefing and other support mechanisms, and accessing information (consisting of key contact details of resources in Tasmania for referring victims and perpetrators).
