dc.description.notes | Speech by Mr Tom Calma, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Ending violence in Indigenous communities Forum, Parliament House Canberra, 19 June 2006<br/ >General Overview: In his speech, Tom Calma, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, speaks on the issues that must be addressed in overcoming family violence in Indigenous communities in Australia.<br/ ><br/ >3. Support and build on processes and networks that have already been developed, including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector and the Aboriginal and Islander Child Care Services. He also refers to the directory of men's groups compiled by the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council of NSW focusing on anger management and counseling as useful<br/ ><br/ >6. Look for positives and celebrate the victories, although these are often not reported<br/ ><br/ >Conclusion: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can no longer accept governments making commitments without effecting processes and programs to achieve them. They can also no longer accept the failure of government to commit to urgent plans of action accompanied by adequate funding. There must be adequate measures within set timeframes. Calma suggests it will take a generation to achieve health equity in Indigenous communities. | en |
