Abstract:  This study explores the challenges associated with the use of technology in presenting children’s evidence in Australian courtrooms. Through qualitative interviews with 18 professionals across five Australian jurisdictions, the study identifies recurring issues with the technology, including operator error, poor audio-visual quality, and system malfunctions. These problems lead to increased stress for court employees and witnesses, extended and disrupted trial proceedings, and compromised evidence quality. The study provides tangible recommendations for improving the use of technology in courtrooms, aiming to enhance the experience of child witnesses and improve the administration of justice.

  • Technological issues, such as poor audio-visual quality and operator errors, are common in Australian courtrooms when presenting children’s evidence.
  • These challenges lead to increased stress for court staff and witnesses, disruptions in trial proceedings, and compromised evidence quality.
  • The study recommends improvements in training for court staff and the upgrading of courtroom technology to better support vulnerable witnesses.
