This article summarises a systematic review by Jean-Thorn et al. (2023) that explores how community factors can foster resilience in young people (aged ≤24 years) who have experienced maltreatment. The review synthesised findings from 44 quantitative studies, identifying key community elements that contribute to resilience. Notably, having a supportive or caring relationship with an adult outside the family, such as a camp counsellor or cultural leader, and involvement in extracurricular activities, like sports or arts, were associated with increased resilience. These factors provide external resources that young people can draw upon to positively adapt to adversity. The article highlights the importance of community-level protective factors, especially for those lacking access to specialised support services, and suggests that programs aiming to foster resilience should consider incorporating these community elements.en_US
