dc.description.abstract | This report examines the ongoing over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Australia's child protection systems. It highlights the systemic challenges and barriers faced by Indigenous families and communities, as well as the structural and cultural factors influencing child safety and wellbeing. The 2024 Family Matters Report evaluates progress toward reducing this over-representation, as outlined in the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, and emphasises the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations in implementing effective, culturally safe solutions. Recommendations include increased investment in prevention, early intervention, and family-led decision-making models, alongside the establishment of independent Commissioners for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children in every jurisdiction. | en_US |
