This report presents the findings of the 2021 National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey (NCAS), conducted by ANROWS. The NCAS is a nationally representative survey that measures Australians’ understanding of, and attitudes towards, violence against women and gender inequality. The 2021 NCAS, based on a sample of 19,100 respondents, examines trends over time and identifies demographic factors influencing attitudes and beliefs. Key findings indicate slow but measurable improvements in public understanding of violence against women, although significant gaps remain, particularly in recognising non-physical abuse and coercive control. The report also explores bystander responses, identifying barriers to intervention, and examines attitudes towards gender roles, sexual violence, and technology-facilitated abuse. The findings provide critical insights for policymakers, prevention practitioners, and researchers working to shift harmful social norms and strengthen efforts to prevent gender-based violence in Australia.en_US
