Notes:  "This article is a revised and updated version of a document prepared for the Violence Against Women Electronic Network (VAWnet)", which may also be found on the Research and Resources database under the title 'A Review of Standards for Batterer Intervention Programs' by Juliet Austin and Juergen Dankwort.
Systematically reviews standards regulating batterer interventions in 37 jurisdictions in the USA in terms of their status (complete / draft / in development) and type (voluntary or mandatory; perceived legitimacy; inclusiveness; how compliance achieved). There was considerable similarity in the topics addressed, but typically a rationale for inclusion or exclusion of particular content was not provided. Victim safety was explicitly identified in 81% of standards as the essential primary focus of batterer programmes. Holding the batterer accountable was a priority in 86%. Identifies some areas for further development, including standards for women mandated to treatment; appropriate interventions with gay and lesbian clients; culturally sensitive interventions; improving collaborative functioning of the justice system with the standards; economic and effective ways of monitoring compliance with standards; additional research on treatment outcomes and on the effectiveness of the standards.
