Notes:	Provides a critical analysis of constructions of domestic violence solely as a patriarchal practice, utilising the Keys Young report, 'Ending Domestic Violence? Programs for Perpetrators', as an example of the dangers of allowing one approach to domestic violence to dominate the political spectrum. Whilst acknowledging the role of the women’s movement in placing domestic violence on political agendas and the importance of maintaining a recognition of patriarchy as a major source of male-on-female violence, the author questions the viability of policies and intervention strategies which cannot adequately account for other forms of disadvantage and discrimination, such as poverty. Drawing upon Foucault’s analysis of discursive knowledge, the author suggests that to accept the dominant discourse as instructive is to silence alternative ones, thereby inhibiting greater insight and development. Advocates the funding and evaluation of a diversity of approaches to researching and working with violence in families such that the structural, social and personal complexity of intimate and family relationships might be adequately accounted for.
