Notes:  This article analyses women’s uses of violence in heterosexual and same-gender relationships and against their children in the light of feminism and bell hook’s model of patriarchal violence in the home. The integrated theory of battering developed by Zemsky and Gilbert, Poorman and Simmons is employed to explore the issue. Experiences of female victims and aggressors from diverse cultural backgrounds living in the U.S. are narrated to illustrate the three elements of the model: learning to abuse, opportunity to abuse and choosing to abuse. A literature review of feminist and family systems research is also provided
