General Overview: In this meta analysis of research studies, the authors report on the prevalence and consequences of dating violence against heterosexual adolescent girls and young adult women. They suggest dating violence is a serious risk factor for subsequent dysfunction and discuss the need for comprehensive prevention approaches.

Discussion: The authors begin by defining the manifestations of dating violence: emotional/psychological, physical and/or sexual aggression. Statistical information regarding the prevalence of violence against teenage girls and young adult women is provided, although the authors caution that study findings vary depending on definitions used and assessment metrics applied.

The authors discuss consequences of dating violence for teenage girls and young women, including negative impacts on mental health, pregnancy, school problems, medical health problems, and serious injury resulting from physical or sexual violence. They are also more likely to experience future victimisation. The review considered the experience of adolescent girls as perpetrators of dating violence. Drawing on a social-ecological model, the authors discuss prevention efforts used to prevent dating violence and identify some specific programs. They note the need for further development and evaluation of prevention programs. In particular, they identify a need to understand, measure and analyse the relative effects of interventions.
