Notes:  General overview:This presents a case report in the US in which a patient delayed her cancer treatment due to domestic violence and the cervical cancer in the patient worsened as a result.

Objective and Method:It describes the first reported case in the literature. Discussion: The importance for physicians to consider the role and effects of domestic violence as a contributing factor in delaying treatment or medical compliance is discussed, including a review of the literature. Other studies have suggested the negative indirect impact of domestic violence on patient’s health, psychological and mental well-being.

Results:After several years of declining treatment, the patient was questioned separately from her partner when she disclosed a long history of domestic violence.

Conclusions:Physicians need to recognise the signs, ask the right questions, and make the referrals to help domestic violence victims receive the timely health care they need.
