Notes:  This article challenges the assumption that regards contradictory to love, men who have been physically, psychologically and sexually abusive. Such an assumption is utilised to question the veracity of the abuse and the credibility of the victim. Dominant discourses of romantic love are explored to understand the statements of love of women who kill their abusers. The lack of common law precedents about relationships and love is discussed to highlight the law’s narrow recognition of relationships as functions of property. Finally, the courtroom dynamics in which women’s account of love are constructed as unreasonable are examined.
