Title: Empowering victims of family violence: could anti-discrimination laws play a role?
Other Titles: Australian Review of Public Affairs
Authors: Smith, Belinda
Orchiston, Tashina
Keywords: Workplaces;Legal issues
Year: 2012
Publisher: University of Sydney
Citation: March 2012
Notes:  Article discusses family violence in the workplace and cites findings from a nation-wide study conducted by the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse that 30% of respondents to its Workplace Survey had experienced family violence (including non-physical forms) over the course of their lifetime. Despite the high prevalence, workers are typically reluctant to disclose domestic violence to employers and colleagues. The authors argue that anti-discrimination protection could be the ‘missing link’ in Australia’s regulatory response to domestic violence, by both discouraging negative stereotyping around domestic violence and empowering victims to seek support.
