Notes:  This journal article details the authors’ US research study which hypothesised that domestic violence perpetrators who receive a 90-minute alcohol-related intervention as well as a 40-hour group batterer program will engage in less frequent and heavy alcohol consumption and less aggressive or violent behaviour. The article discusses the well-known association between drug and/or alcohol misuse and incidents of domestic violence, therefore emphasising the need for improved and increased interventions.

Stuart et al.’s research presents evidence that confirm their initial hypothesis that implementing a standard batterer program in conjunction with a brief alcohol intervention does successfully reduce the frequency and amount of drinking and violent behaviour by domestic violence perpetrators. These improvements in behaviour, however, significantly diminished over the following 12 month period.
