Notes:  This article presents the results of a randomised controlled trial of 272 women attending 52 family doctors in clinics in Victoria, Australia who had screened positive for fear of a partner in the previous 12 months in a health and lifestyle survey. The treatment group was offered counselling based on the Psychosocial Readiness Model by their doctors who had completed a Healthy Relationships Training program. The control group received "usual care".

Follow-up at 12 months showed little difference between the two groups; however, those in the test group appeared to have benefited from the counselling sessions in that they showed a reduction in depressive symptoms compared to the control group.

The authors recommend that family doctors be encouraged to inquire about the safety of their patients and their children and to provide counselling in cases of domestic abuse.
