Notes:	Now called Family Court Review (ISSN: 1531-2445) Special Issue: Domestic Violence Provides an overview of recent debate, in the United States, regarding allegations of domestic violence in the context of child custody and visitation disputes and some of the legal and policy issues that have emerged. Proposes a ‘decision tree’ method for assessing the role domestic violence should play in visitation disputes that includes recognition of the type, extent and effect of the violence, the factors contributing to its occurrence, the capacity of parents to care for children where abuse is an issue and the role of family and social systems in promoting and/or hindering the safety of children and spouses. Suggests that recommendations to the court should be based on both a thorough evaluation of these factors and some more general guiding principles, such as the primacy of child safety and the preference of the child to be cared for by the non-abusive parent.
