Notes:  This research used a constructivist grounded theory approach to explore Aboriginal women’s attitudes and beliefs about sexual violence. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with seven professional Aboriginal women residing in Perth, Western Australia. As the study was conducted by a non-Aboriginal person, it was overseen by a Critical Reference Group of Aboriginal women, who provided cultural guidance for all aspects of the research.

Emerging themes included historical contexts contributing to attitudes and beliefs about sexual violence in Aboriginal communities, such as the breakdown of traditional governance and family systems, and the impacts of historical and transgenerational trauma. Participants also identified contemporary factors such as community disadvantage, internalised oppression, and racism as contributors to sexual violence.

The study highlighted the central importance of family in Aboriginal culture and explored the role of ‘shame’ in shaping responses to sexual violence. A model was developed to illustrate the interrelationship between these contributing factors, alongside the basic social process of 'weighing up,' which describes how participants navigate competing contexts to determine actions and interactions related to sexual violence.
