This report provides a succinct overview of the history of circle sentencing, an initiative currently being trialled by the Local Court in Nowra, NSW, aimed at developing more appropriate ways of sentencing and/or punishing Aboriginal offenders. The planning and implementation stages of the pilot are reviewed and an analysis of the success of the model, based on a series of case studies, is conducted. The findings of a survey conducted into the expectations, satisfaction, and general experiences of key participants in the programme are presented and discussed, and some of the central issues raised at the 2003 Magistrates Conference, which was aimed at assessing the success of the circle sentencing approach, are outlined.
