Authors: New South Wales Child Death Review Team
Keywords: Statistics;Homicide;Impact on children and young people
Year: 2010
Publisher: NSW Commission for Children and Young People, Surry Hills
Notes:  The purpose of the New South Wales Child Death Review Team (CDRT, the Team) is to provide information about child deaths and to prevent or reduce the number of deaths in New South Wales of children and young people from birth to 17 years of age.

From January to December 2009 there were a total of 565 deaths of children usually resident in NSW that occurred over the period. This represents 33 deaths for every 100,000 children and young people, the lowest mortality rate since the Team commenced reporting in 1996.

Chapter 5 deals with assault as the cause of death. In 2009, seven children aged 0–17 years usually resident in NSW, died in the context of assault in six incidents. All the deaths were registered in NSW. Five of the incidents occurred at the family home and one at the home of a relative. Two of the children were identified as vulnerable.
