The purpose of the New South Wales Child Death Review Team (CDRT, the Team) is to provide information about child deaths and to prevent or reduce the number of deaths in New South Wales of children and young people from birth to 17 years of age.

From January to December 2003, there were a total of 566 child deaths. Of these, 56.9 per cent were male (322 deaths) and 43.1 per cent were female (244 deaths).

Chapter 8 deals with assault as the cause of death. During 2003, seventeen children and young people died as a result of assault. These children died in 15 separate incidents. Two incidents involved the deaths of siblings. In two incidents the perpetrator of the fatal assault also died. The deaths of these children and young people will be reviewed in detail by the NSW Ombudsman.

In this reporting period, 13 of the 17 children and young people were identified as vulnerable. Reports to the NSW Department of Community Services related to parents’ alcohol and drug abuse, inadequate supervision, neglect, physical harm, domestic violence, physical abuse, and behaviour management difficulties within the family. Vulnerable children and young people were over-represented in deaths due to fatal assault.
