Notes:  The purpose of the New South Wales Child Death Review Team (CDRT, the Team) is to provide information about child deaths and to prevent or reduce the number of deaths in New South Wales of children and young people from birth to 17 years of age.

From January to December 2006, there were a total of 628 deaths of children and young people aged 0 to 17 years registered in New South Wales.

Chapter 7 deals with assault as the cause of death. During 2006, ten children and young people died as a result of assault, making assault the third most frequent cause of external death. Seven of the 10 children and young people were identified as vulnerable. In two of the cases, the first risk of harm reports were made only after the assault had occurred but before the children’s subsequent deaths. Risk of harm reports relating to four of the other children were made prior to the assaults, and concerned issues of domestic violence, parental drug use, injuries suspicious of abuse, chronic financial issues and neglect.
