Notes:  This report is prepared by the Victorian Child Death Review Committee (VCDRC), an independent body established to provide external overviews of the findings of Child Death Inquiries. This annual report presents a background to the VCDRC, the Children Legislation Amendment Act 2009, a review of child deaths occurring in 2009, trends from 1996 to 2009, and Child Death inquiries reviewed in 2009 to 2010. The report concludes with practice recommendations focused on assessment, responding to adolescent with high risk behaviour and partnership. A key finding from the VCDRC noted that of the death inquiries reviewed by the Committee in 2009-2010, parental substance abuse and family violence presented equally as the most prevalent risk factors in 62 percent of the cases.
