This report to the Federal Attorney-General focuses on family violence if and when it becomes visible in the family law system in Australia. The Family Law Council makes a number of recommendations to improve the knowledge of the courts and family relationship centres around the issue of family violence, including: expansion of the definition of domestic violence in the legislation; establishment of expert panel to build a common knowledge base on the known patterns and effects of family violence; production of best practice guidelines for lawyers working in the area of family law around family violence, establishment of national systems to better record and track protection orders; and community education to dispel misunderstandings about the provisions of the 2006 reforms to the Family Law Act.
