General overview:This report provides information about children who come into contact with the community services departments of the states and territories for protective reasons. The information comes to the AIHW from four national data collections: Notifications, Investigations and Substantiations (NIS); Care and Protection Orders (CPO); Out-of-Home Care (OOHC); Intensive Family Support Services (IFSS).

* Throughout Australia in 2008-2009, over 200,000 children were the subject of one or more child protection notifications; almost 33,000 children were the subject of one or more substantiations; over 35,000 children were on care and protection orders; and around 34,000 children were living in out-of-home care.

* Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are over-represented in all of these areas.
