Notes:  General Overview: This online survey of 5 476 gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex Australians revealed disturbingly high rates of intimate partner abuse.

Discussion: Private Lives:was an online survey of 5 476 gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex people conducted in 2005. The survey asked questions about sexual identity, attraction and experience, education, employment, religion, living arrangements, relationship status, health, drug use, discrimination and violence, intimate partner abuse, connectedness and coming out. It was conducted with the aim of documenting aspects of the health and wellbeing of GLBTI people and providing information to policy makers and practitioners so that services can be targeted and appropriate.

Respondents to the survey reported high rates of intimate partner abuse: 28% of males, 41% of females, and 62% of transgender males. The survey did not identify the gender of the perpetrator. Respondents reported high rates of physical, verbal and sexual assault and isolation from family and friends. Of those who were hit, 19% reported it to the police, while 18% of those who experienced forced sex reported it. More than half of those who reported to police agreed that they were treated with courtesy and respect and appropriate action was taken but about one third disagreed.
