Title:	Routine screening for domestic violence program : snapshot report 2

Notes:	This reports a one-month snapshot of routine screening conducted in Area Health Services across NSW in November 2004 (based on the former Area Health Service structure of 17 Area Health Services), for monitoring the routine screening strategy’s implementation and informing service development. This repeats a snapshot conducted in November 2003. A comparison with the 2003 results gives a reference for reviewing progress. A full comparison of results is found in Appendix 1. Key findings include: South Western Sydney and Far West Area Health Services have not commenced screening; overall screening rate has increased from 70% to 75%; 504 (6.5%) of the women screened had experienced domestic violence in the past 12 months; women accepting the offer of assistance increased significantly from 41% in 2003 to 71% in 2004; number of police notifications increased from 2% in 2003 to 4% in 2004; DoCs’ reports increased from 8% in 2003 to 12% in 2004. It reports that the Routine Screening for Domestic Violence Program is a successful strategy for identifying domestic violence. Considerable progress has been made in implementing screening in the 4 target programmes of antenatal, early childhood health, mental health and alcohol and other drugs. Women’s health nursing services area is suggested as a priority for introducing additional screening. Appendix 2 contains the NSW Health Screening for Domestic Violence form for health workers to complete. Appendix 3 has the Snapshot data collection form and Appendix 4 has the guidelines for data collection.
