Notes: | This presents the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia’s (YACWA) response to the Department for Community Development’s Family and Domestic Violence Policy in 2005. YACWA is supportive of most aspects of the policy with regard to its general approach, principles and goals. YACWA recommends that children are defined as those up to 12 years old and young people are 12 to 25 years old and that the policy uses the term ‘young people’ specifically rather than the implicit inclusion of young people through the term ‘children’. It suggests there should be acknowledgement of the vulnerability of young people entering into intimate relationships and that appropriate support should be given to build resilience and relationships skills to prevent the cycle of violence. It believes that young people experiencing family or domestic violence should be supported to make decisions to remove themselves and live independently through SAAP services, income support and other youth services. It advocates that adequate resources be given to services addressing family and domestic violence, especially for those working with Indigenous communities, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, people with diverse sexuality and gender, and for those in rural and regional areas. |
