Notes:  A report presenting the aims, methodology and results of a research project carried out by the Women’s Health Goulburn North East (WHGNE) specialist women’s service. The study examines the factors that were helpful in assisting the women leave family violence. Interviews with the participants indicate that the experiences of women who left violent situations can be divided into 3 categories: following an extreme episode of violence; following the sudden realisation they were victims of domestic violence; or as the outcome of long-term planning. The author also outlined the factors that prevented women from leaving, the issues that made it difficult for women to extricate themselves from the violence, the positive and negative experiences of the health and welfare system, the contributions a support network can make in leaving violence, and the important role of the strength of the women. Recommendations for evaluation, future research and amendments for current practices and services are also featured.
