Outlines the Victorian Police Code of Practice for investigation of family violence allegations, from the reporting stage to referral and/or criminal or civil prosecution. Basic principles, such as the obligation to act on all reports of family violence and the obligation to prioritise safety of women and children, are explained. The models and strategies adopted for assessing risk, determining whether or not to proceed to prosecution and specific issues that may arise when dealing with particular classes of persons, such as Indigenous communities or people with a disability, are also discussed. Recording requirements and the various referral options are explained and the trial process, in both civil and criminal proceedings, and the police officer's role in those proceedings, is addressed in detail. Mechanisms for evaluating police responses to and investigation of family violence are also outlined. The final section lists relevant referral information.
