Presents the methodology and findings of a national survey, conducted in the United States, aimed at ascertaining the incidence, prevalence and consequences of violence against women in its many forms. The prevalence and incidence of rape, physical assault and stalking and the heightened risk of violence amongst cultural and racial minorities, including Hispanics, is examined. Findings in relation to intimate partner violence are contrasted with those of previous studies and the nature and incidence of violence experienced by children and young people is explored. Rates of injury, hospitalisation and use of other health care facilities are also recorded. The paper concludes by summarising the implications of the findings for policy and practice.
