A meta-evaluation of the first phase of the Australian Government’s ‘Partnerships Against Domestic Violence’ (PADV) initiative was conducted in 2003. “Working with Women Affected by Violence” represents one in a series of 6 reports on the outcomes and findings of this meta-evaluation. The report provides a background to the incidence, prevalence and nature of domestic violence, its economic costs and identifies priority areas for service and policy development. A review of explanations for domestic violence is given with implications for intervention with women outlined. An overview of projects undertaken nationally which have informed the PADV initiative is presented and the specific programmes funded under Phase 1 of PADV which have relevance for working with women are highlighted. Implications of the findings of the meta-evaluation for policy, good practice and research into the effects of domestic violence on women are also considered.
