This paper responds to the report commissioned by the Family Law Pathways Advisory Group, ‘Out of the Maze: Pathways to the Future for Separating Families’, drawing on three key themes: firstly, the need for early intervention, community education and appropriate assessment and referral services; secondly, the necessity for a greater focus on the needs of children in family law disputes and the development of practices which are inclusive and enable practitioners to determine their best interests; and lastly, the need for greater coordination of family law services and related agencies and the development of a multi-disciplinary approach to dispute resolution. Each area of concern is discussed in relation to current programmes aimed at addressing the issue and plans for future programme implementation.
