This ample report is a response to the 35 per cent of Family Court matters that involve at least one unrepresented party. It addresses the causes and effects of self-representation in the Family Court of Australia. Interviews with litigants in person, judges, judicial registrars, registrars and practitioners provided the information for the research. Hearings were also observed and determined cases studied. The aspects considered are: the reasons to appear without legal representation; the demographic characteristics of litigants in person; their needs and sources of assistance; the effects of being unrepresented; a comparison of the resources employed by represented and unrepresented litigants; and the problems they present to the Court. A number of recommendations are suggested.
