Adopting a public health approach to violence, which recognises and defines violence in its various forms as a major public health issue, this report presents the findings of the first World Report on Violence and Health. Part 1 provides an overview of the nature, prevalence and costs, both economic and social, of violence globally and proposes an ecological model for examining the range of factors which contribute to violent behaviour in society. Some strategies for prevention and challenges for governments are also discussed. Parts 2-8 attempt a more detailed analysis of interpersonal, self-directed and collective forms of violence and the contexts within which they occur, including violence against intimate partners, elderly abuse, child abuse, sexual violence and violence amongst young people. Each section presents some individual, interpersonal, community and structural strategies prevention and identifies key gaps in service provision, research and evaluation. The final section of the report reviews some of the major lessons learnt to date and outlines recommendations for future action.
