Southern Family Life was one of seven organisations funded under the Partnerships Against Domestic Violence initiative through the Victorian Department of Human Services to document good practice in the 'Supporting Children and Young People affected by Family Violence Project'. Describes the STAR (Safe Talk About Rights) 8-week group programme for 8-11 year old children. Desired outcome is that children understand their feelings and relationships, and be able to choose respectful ways of communicating their needs. Parents and children are not seen as ready to participate in groups until free of violence for 9-12 months. Family violence discussed in children's groups as 'family wars'. Concurrent caregiver group is skill based and solution focussed. Parent feedback specifically identifies a reduction in aggressive acting out behaviour of children and an improvement in their ability to encourage and support the child's positive behaviours.
